Hunt Options

Pheasant: Your hunting party will embrace the hunt of a lifetime while shooting 100% WILD pheasants.   Hunting habitat will consist of CRP, crop fields, woody shelterbelts, cattails, ravines, and Milo.   Whether on a father/son hunt or a corporate outing, Son of a Gun Ranch has the perfect set up to get you the birds.   Upland game dogs are available or bring your hunting companion with!   Kennels and dog runs are provided with your stay. Sharp Tail Grouse:   Grouse season starts before the Pheasant season and is an excellent opportunity for you and your dogs to polish up hunting skills.   In this area of South Dakota sharp tails are usually located in large pastures adjacent to crop fields.   A great sharp tail hunt will take some walking, and a good pointer is always appreciated.   Some of the best sharp tail action occurs later in the fall when the pheasant craze is over and the sharpies group up.

Waterfowl:

  Son of a Gun Ranch is located on the western portion of the prairie pothole region of South Dakota.   You will have a chance to witness any variety of ducks and geese during the incredible fall migration.   In addition to the migrating waterfowl, local ducks and geese spend the entire fall in the area you will be hunting.   Pass shooting, field hunts, and on the water action will intrigue seasoned veterans and beginners.

Spring Turkey:

Turkey's are considered Big Game in South Dakota. Therefore, a drawing takes place every winter.   Son of a Gun Ranch will inform you application due dates of the proper area for which to apply .   While on your turkey hunt you will witness some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain South Dakota has to offer.   The Merriam species of turkey inhabits the river bottoms and coulees you will be hunting.

Spring Snow Goose:

  Son of a Gun Ranch is located in a major spring flyway and the number of birds will leave you inspired and in awe.   Let our guide show you an experience of a lifetime while you hunt grain fields over a large set of decoys.   Also, on the water action and pass shooting will leave your shoulder sore and the dog tired!   Truly a site to see!!!

Archery Whitetail and Mule Deer:  

Hunting for trophy deer is extremely challenging but very rewarding in South Dakota.   At Son of a Gun Ranch you will be provided stand placements in a variety of cover, including shelter belts, slough bottoms, water holes, and fence lines.   Most of the hunting will be in ground blinds strategically placed where you should get a chance at a trophy.   Some tree stands are used in the shelter belts, and spot and stalks are implemented give the right situation.

Rifle Deer:

  Rifle Deer tags are issued through a state drawing system for Resident and Non-Resident alike.   If you are lucky enough to draw a tag, Son of a Gun Ranch will provide you with opportunities at trophy deer and memories to last a lifetime!   Son of a Gun Ranch implements Quality Deer Management to harvest an animal.   By practicing QDM we will provide outstanding hunts for the generations to come!

Predator and Varmint Hunts: Predator and varmint hunting is a year round opportunity for South Dakota hunters.   There is an ample supply of coyotes, fox and prairie dogs to provide you with hours of entertaining hunting.   Winter is prime time for fox and coyotes, when the furs are in the best conditions and the breeding season begins.   Spring brings an unbelievable prairie dog hunt that is guaranteed to sharpen your rifle skills.   Make sure to bring plenty of shells because you won't want to run out!   A light weight caliber of any weapon is the typical choice for the varmint hunter.   Remember, at Son of a Gun Ranch, fur coats are always welcome!

Bring your hunting Dog:   All bird hunts are better when shared with friends, especially the 4 legged variety.   Son of a Gun Ranch welcomes and encourages you to bring your dog(s) with on your hunting trip.   Please remember that your dog is your responsibility when at the ranch and in the field.   Son of a Gun Ranch is not responsible for any injuries your dog may receive while in the field.   For your dog's safety and the safety of others, we require all dogs be fully vaccinated.   Dogs are not to be inside the cabins at anytime.   Thank you!

Lodging:   Son of a Gun Ranch provides you with a comfortable newly built cabin for your stay.   Three bedrooms, full bath, and a full kitchen should accommodate you well.    The cabin is on Spring Lake, situated perfectly for your viewing enjoyment.   Witness pheasants, waterfowl, deer, and the best sunsets the world has to offer.
